Bourbon coffee: an influential Arabica variety
Explore Bourbon, red and yellow cherry selections, and its relationship to Caturra—without treating fruit colour as a flavour guarantee.
The name and the lineage
Bourbon is one of Arabica’s most influential historical and genetic groups. Its name is associated with Réunion, formerly called Bourbon, before selections spread to other countries. It is important for understanding varieties such as Caturra. A bag labelled Bourbon describes a variety, not proof that the beans were grown on Réunion.
Red or yellow?
Red and yellow Bourbon names refer to ripe cherry colour. The genetic background of selections sold under these names can vary between regions. Colour alone does not establish that yellow is sweeter or red is better. Farm conditions, cherry selection, drying, storage, and roasting have direct effects on the coffee you actually drink.
A useful tasting comparison
Where possible, compare Bourbon with another variety from the same region and a similar process. You may notice differences in sweetness, body, or acidity, but one lot cannot define a whole lineage. Keep storage and brewing consistent. A balanced cup matters more than whether you can match a roaster’s exact fruit or confectionery descriptor.
